SHRM/WISHRM - Legislative Advocacy on Behalf of the Profession

Sometimes the legal actions that impact HR professionals are a mystery and we can feel helpless when it comes to decisions that are made by our  legislators.  This program will provide attendees with insight into the advocacy efforts being undertaken by SHRM/WISHRM at the federal (SHRM National) and state (WISHRM - Wisconsin State Council) levels.   We will specifically identify the key legislation SHRM is advocating for on the federal and state levels, how local Chapter Members can get involved and how Chapter Members can raise additional issues to advocate for.  

Objectives: SHRM/WISHRM have made it a priority to be advocates when it comes to legislation that impacts the profession both on the state and federal levels.

1. National Advocacy (Day on the Hill / Legislative Conference).  Attendees will get a glimpse into what SHRM is doing on behalf of the membership at the federal level and how they can be involved.   We will discuss the efforts underway to advocate on behalf of Workplace Flexibility, High Performance Workplaces and Access to a Legal Workplace.  

2. State Advocacy (Day on the Hill).  Attendees will get a glimpse into what WISHRM is doing on behalf of the membership at the state level and how they can be involved.  We will discuss the efforts underway to advocate on behalf of Alignment of State and Federal Family and Medical Leave, Statewide Pre-Emption as to Employment-Related Laws and Worker’s Compensation Cost Containment (including the successes to date).  

This session is pending approval for SHRM Professional Development Credits (PDCs) and HRCI recertification credits.


Speaker Biography:

Tony Renning (Founding Shareholder – Strang, Patteson, Renning, Lewis & Lacy, s.c.). Tony concentrates his practice in labor and employment as well as school law, litigation and counseling. He provides advice and counsel to employers about their rights and obligations under federal and state laws and regulations. He advises on all aspects of labor and employment compliance, including wage and hour, leaves of absence, discrimination, harassment, reductions in force, work force management, employment policies and handbooks as well as other employment-related matters. 

Tony also has experience with labor negotiations, union certification and decertification campaigns, unfair labor practice litigation and contract administration, including grievance arbitration. He regularly represents clients before the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, National Labor Relations Board, Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development and Wisconsin Employment Relations Commission. In addition, he conducts employment-related training for management. His client base includes private (various industries) and public (counties, cities and school districts) employers of all sizes.

Tony currently serves as the Government Affairs Director for the Wisconsin SHRM Council (WISHRM).
